One such title that is easily one of the most underrated western RPGs of all time is Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. The title is considered by many to be one of the deepest role-playing experiences around, which makes it a shame that most people never ever bothered with giving this game a try when it was released all the way back on November 16, 2004 — a date when a little-known game by the name of Half-Life 2 was released as well.

Suffice to say, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines never sold well… but its re-releases have fared better, leading to the production of a sequel as well. For people who can’t wait for the next chapter of this brilliant title, here are some games that are similar to Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines in some way or the other.

Updated May 12, 2022 by Ritwik Mitra: Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is an incredibly immersive sim that suffered in terms of sales due to the unfortunate timing of its release. Thankfully, the internet brought some much-needed attention to the game and made a ton of people realize that they’d missed out on a massively underrated gem.

Bloodlines is a game filled to the brim with character and amazing roleplaying opportunities, with the lack of technical polish being the only negative in an otherwise brilliant experience. Here are some RPGs similar to this title that fans of the game should definitely check out.

15 Divinity: Original Sin 2

The first Divinity: Original Sin was an excellent modern CRPG, and the Enhanced Edition improved upon this game extensively. However, the second game was what really blew everyone out of the water with its incredible gameplay, story, characters, and everything else along the same lines.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 deserves the title of being one of the greatest RPGs ever made. Players who love deep roleplaying systems and character-driven stories (similar to the one in Bloodlines) will find this game to be right up their alley.

14 Horizon Zero Dawn

Bloodlines might have featured some great stories, but the gameplay was sorely lacking. Players who want the best of both worlds should look no further than Horizon Zero Dawn.

The first game in the Horizon series does a great job of establishing a beautiful world and rich lore, with the post-apocalyptic setting being quite riveting. The fact that players can hunt down robot dinosaurs is the cherry on top of an amazing experience.

13 Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the first game by Warhorse Studios, which in itself makes it a massive achievement. The sheer scale of this game is incredible, given the small nature of the studio.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance features a great story with some interesting moments. The moment-to-moment gameplay can be slightly janky, but fans of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines shouldn’t have too many issues in this department.

12 System Shock 2

System Shock 2 is one of the scariest and most immersive games ever made, with this game setting the foundations for future titles like BioShock as well. The first game in the series isn’t really all that accessible, so it’s great that the sequel improved on so many fronts.

SHODAN is still a pretty engaging antagonist, with the oppressive atmosphere of the game genuinely making players feel trapped within the halls of the Von Braun. It’s an incredible immersive sim that fans should definitely check out, especially if they love the gameplay loop of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.

11 Deux Ex

Speaking of immersive sims, it would be impossible to not talk about the original Deus Ex. This game was a monumental achievement for its time and is still considered by many to be the best game in the series, even with all the advancements that have taken place in the gaming industry.

Deus Ex was ahead of its time, especially when it came to the groundbreaking level design and the multitude of ways in which players could approach any given goal. This, coupled with a great story, places Deus Ex in a league of its own.

10 Fallout: New Vegas

It would be impossible to talk about deep, consequence-driven role-playing titles without mentioning the masterpiece that is Fallout: New Vegas, a game that put Obsidian Entertainment on the map as one of the best western role-playing video game developers around.

While mods might be required to make New Vegas enjoyable on modern systems, rest assured that this investment will be recouped with the numerous memorable moments scattered throughout the entire game.

9 The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim

Speaking of IPs owned by Bethesda, one simply can’t talk about immersive role-playing experiences and not talk about the revolutionary title that is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

At this point, one doesn’t need to be informed about the greatness of the title — after all, it’s something that most people are already well aware of. The game is still exceedingly popular despite being over a decade old. The sheer volume of mods ensures that Skyrim won’t go out of style anytime soon, at least until the release of The Elder Scrolls 6.

8 Vampyr

Dontnod Entertainment is a rather underrated video game developer, with most people knowing them only because of their Life Is Strange series. However, the developer has also crafted some enjoyable action RPGs, with Vampyr being one such title. While the title might certainly have its flaws, there’s no denying the fact that Vampyr will certainly be a great experience for anyone who’s seeking out a good story set in London during the early 90s.

Oh, it also has vampires as well — obviously enough — which will help fans of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines feel right at home.

7 Planescape Torment

The golden age of CRPGs is something that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines took a ton of inspiration from while detailing its mechanics, which is why most of these games should also be tried out as well.

One such title is Planescape Torment, which features an interesting story and a unique world that will certainly resonate with most fans. Controlling The Nameless One as he tries to figure out his identity is an entertaining experience in every sense of the word.

6 Baldur’s Gate 2

Of course, one would be remiss to talk about classic CRPGs without mentioning the masterpiece that is Baldur’s Gate II — a game that is still talked about heavily to this day.

The brainchild of BioWare before they became a more action-oriented studio is easily one of the deepest and most complex CRPGs of all time, and fans of the genre should definitely check this game out if they haven’t already.

5 Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption

Most people might not be aware of the fact that Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines is the sequel to a CRPG that was released in 2000.

While Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption is generally considered to be a mixed bag, any fan of its sequel can overlook the game’s faults to enjoy the first chapter of a series that turned out to be a cult classic for all the right reasons.

4 Neverwinter Nights

BioWare was at the helm of developing amazing role-playing games in the 2000s, and Neverwinter Nights was another game that was a part of their robust arsenal. The sheer amount of content present in this title is nothing to scoff at, with fans enjoying hours of amazing content if they chose to try this title out.

3 Mass Effect 2

It would be impossible to talk about action role-playing titles without mentioning the golden age of BioWare, with Mass Effect 2 being an obvious highlight. The game was easily BioWare at its very peak, featuring some of the best story-driven experiences of all time.

However, if players want to opt for a high fantasy setting as opposed to a sci-fi one, then they might be better off with the following title instead.

2 Dragon Age: Origins

Dragon Age: Origins is what pretty much put BioWare on the map as the go-to-developer for AAA modern role-playing experiences. The game took the tactical combat of BioWare’s previous outings and lathered a fresh coat of paint to the proceedings.

The end result was one of the most beautiful games at that time, and also one of the most complex. Dragon Age: Origins was exactly what hardcore RPG fans wanted at that point, and one can’t help but feel worried about the future of the franchise given the trajectory that the once-great BioWare has now been on for quite some time.

1 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

One studio that has managed to remain brilliant to this day after releasing some truly brilliant games is none other than The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It’s a game that still holds up to this day as one of the best role-playing experiences in the eighth generation of gaming.

Watching the story of Geralt slowly develop over the course of the first two games, before crescendoing in a brilliant climax, is truly the height of modern RPGs.
