Many MMOs garner mixed reactions from a large pool of players; when a player pool is very diverse, it’s important to know that not every MMO is going to resonate with every player. Some players prefer turn-based, while others prefer tap target games. It’s entirely normal for preferences to vary, and Elyon is no different. What are some positives and negatives regarding Elyon?

Loved: The Combat

One place that Elyon shines bright is its combat system. Each class has carefully crafted animations with stunning particle effects that make moves feel and appear very powerful (another game with flashy combat is Lost Ark). The battle system’s presentation makes the experience more immersive overall.

Elyon spared no expense so that when a character swings a hammer as a Warlord or fires off a spell as an Elementalist, the player feels like it carries weight and leaves an impact with what it connects with. The combat in Elyon is gratifying, especially when a player finds that particular class that fits best to their play style.

Didn’t Love: Open World PVP

A controversial topic in Elyon and other MMOs like it is realm PVP. PVP is sometimes a welcome feature to a game, and other times it leaves players rolling their eyes (especially players new to the genre). Games that adopt an “open-world PVP” system risk splitting their player base between hardcore players who master the system and casual or PvE-oriented users who wish only to take on the game’s content, not other people.

Of course, Elyon segments this feature into Zones that a player has to enter manually to join the system. But not giving players a choice to completely OPT out of PVP is disconcerting.

Loved: The Skills

Skills in MMOs stand as the backbone of character builds and playstyles (Bless Unleashed is another game with good class skills). While different metas are defined all the time, variety is equally important. Effects, Buffs, and debuffs that skills possess can make or break a game if not structured adequately.

Elyon’s skills are vibrant and dynamic. Each class has several skills that are essential and make for many ways to play in and out of the current meta. In addition, most Elyon skills are different from the next one. If all skills feel the same, it can make any game feel lackluster, not just MMOs.

Didn’t Love: The Lack Of Content

A recent problem with games, not just MMOs, is the inability to provide steady amounts of content within a short timespan. In many instances, MMOs misjudge the amount of time a player will put into a game that they like; Elyon is no different.

While Elyon has multiple outlets to entertain players, the time it takes to complete the content has diminished thanks to grinding and best-in-slot loadouts. MMOs need a recurring line of challenging content for players to remain invested, and Elyon falters in that regard.

Loved: The Dungeons

Sticking on the topic of content, many MMOs seek to entertain their players through the inclusion of dungeons. End game content in Elyon is solid; available to be completed solo or in a party with other players.

Each dungeon stands out due to differences in enemy types and bosses; they don’t feel like they are rinsed and repeated. There are other games that do this type of content better, but Elyon leaves a positive impression with what’s available.

Didn’t Love: EXP Loss

A somewhat harsh system in Elyon is the loss of EXP upon death while facing PvE content (here are some other harsh MMO troupes that are no longer present). Spending a significant amount of time grouping enemies and flowing an efficient EXP path to gain levels and skill points only to have that progress stripped away is more than just frustrating.

This issue is made more prominent when grinding in a PVP designated Zone and getting ambushed by a rival player and losing a fight you could have won along with the EXP gained.

Loved: The Character Creation

Character Creation is sometimes the soul factor of what attracts players to MMOs — creating a character allows players to imprint their identity into the game and become attached to the world. A game with too limited a character creation system can lose many players before they even start the campaign.

Elyon finds a sweet spot between a minimalist design which most MMOs of the era adhere to, and extensive creation similar to games like Black Desert.

Didn’t Love: Lack Of New Classes

Elyon was released with six classes, Warlord, Mystic, Elementalist, Gunner, Slayer, and Assassin. While these classes embody the staple paradigm of role, the lack of variety has become apparent as the game ages. A new class would bring a breath of fresh air to the game, although a simple addition to the pool won’t cut it.

There is more to a class than just being new; it must be unique compared to the other classes. Black Desert is a game that succeeds in making every class feel and behave differently.

Elyon is available on PC.
